By plane
Depending on flights, it may be easier and/or cheaper to fly into Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) and drive (45 minutes South) into Miami proper.

By car
Get in your car and stomp on the gas! (Don't forget to buckle up!)

Interstate 95 (I-95) runs North-South along the East side of the city through downtown, Homestead and the Florida Keys. The Florida Turnpike runs North-South along the west side of the city, connecting Miami to Orlando and points North as well as leading to US1, through Homestead and into the Florida Keys. If you are on the west coast of Florida you can take I-75 south to Ft. Lauderdale. When you get off alligator alley, section of I-75 that crosses the state, you will take 595 East to Ft. Lauderdale.

Buses are available, but often slow and inconvenient. Taxis are generally expensive, but available at almost any time and place. Car rentals are the most convenient for of transportation for visitors, with local companies offering better prices but national chains offering more convenience vis-à-vis return policies and times.

 • Everglades Holiday Park: 21940 Griffin Rd (west to end of road) (954) 434-8111 Here you can see our amazing wetlands and possibly an alligator or two.
 • Flamingo Gardens and Wray Botanical Collection: 3750 S. Flamingo Rd, Davie (954) 473-2955. If you are an outdoors person, or just want to see our state bird you have to visit here.

Shopping

 • Shop at Swap Shop. Get your hair braided there 954-583-2221. The Swap Shop is an older flee market located east on Sunrise Blvd. Along with getting your hair braided you can shop for fruits, vegetables, clothes, nick knacks, and you can practically find other things that other locations would not have. There is also a circus for people who want to take their kids to see the elephants.
 • The Sun-Sentinel is the local paper for Broward County-in which Ft. Lauderdale is located.
