Scranton is a city in northeastern Pennsylvania. The city grew vigorously in the early part of the 20th century along with the coal industry, but declined in population in the last 50 years.

Attractions

Scranton is host to many architecturally interesting buildings from the early 1900s, most notable the courthouse located in the center of the downtown. Also downtown is the former Lackawanna Train Station which now houses a Radisson Hotel as well the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, where concerts are held regularly.

 • Steamtown National Historic Site, 150 South Washington Avenue, (888) 693-9391 ( - The Park is open daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years days. The Steamtown National Historic Site offers tours of a train yard, locomotives, etc.
 • Scranton Iron Furnaces, 159 Cedar Avenue, 570-963-3208 - Open Year-Round
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors Center building Open Seasonally. Blast furnaces built between 1848 and 1857.

Get around

A car is very useful in getting around Scranton, though buses are available at various points throughout the city.

Shopping

A number of small shops are located through out the downtown as well as the Steamtown Mall.

Dining

Old forge style pizza can be found at a number of restaurants located about 10-15 minutes south of Scranton in, where else, Old Forge. Also, try pierogies, a pasta filled with a potato and cheese filling.
