Car is the recommended way to see and do things in the Selinsgrove area. Skeleton service is provided by the Union-Snyder Transportation Alliance via bus, but these buses must be notified and will only pick up customers who call ahead of time.

Rides are based on distance from starting point to ending point. Selinsgrove is also served lightly by taxi service but, like the buses, these must be called ahead of time as it is difficult to find and hail one on the street as in larger metropolitan areas. The local Yellow pages will have the number for both the bus and taxi services throughout the area.

For additional exploration of heritage, culture, dining and shopping in the Central Susquehanna Valley, be sure to check out Lewisburg, PA and Sunbury, PA, both part of the Central Susquehanna Valley Triad. Amish farms are also nearby in Lancaster County. Hershey Bears ice hockey, Red Barons baseball and Wilkes-Barre - Scranton Penguins hockey are all within a short drivable distance from Selinsgrove. Longer distances will take you to the Atlantic coastline.

Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania is a small town inside the Sunbury-Lewisburg-Selinsgrove, PA Combined Statistical Area (population 173,726). The town lies approximately 45 minutes north of Harrisburg, PA and one hour south of Williamsport, PA. Located in the south-central part of the state, Selinsgrove is approximately three hours from Philadelphia, three hours from New York, three hours from Washington-Baltimore and three hours from Pittsburgh. It is considered a prime location for the exurbs of all these cities and has, in fact, seen a strong influx of new residents from all of these metropolitan areas, especially New York, NY and Philadelphia, PA.

Activities

 • Bailey's Produce Market A seasonally evolving produce market, Bailey's sells some of the freshest strawberries, watermelons, flowers, Christmas trees, pumpkins and other fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. Located along Routes 11 & 15 in Selinsgrove.
 • Selinsgrove Speedway The largest dirt racetrack in the northeast, Selinsgrove speedway is home to some of the largest races as well. A regular show at Selinsgrove Speedway will consist of qualifying events and main events for 358 Sprint Cars (25 laps), Late Models (20 laps), Pro Stocks (12 laps), and Roadrunners (12 laps). Races take place on Fridays and Saturdays between March and October. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students (Age 12-17) and free for children 11 years of age and younger.
 • Susquehanna Sports Place An attraction known for it's eclectic collection of sporting opportunities, SSP has batting cages for softball and baseball, a mini golf course, an arcade and many other attractions. Located at East 18th Street, Hummels Wharf, PA.

Education

Selinsgrove is home to one of the country's best small colleges and is just minutes away from a Patriot League university.
 • Susquehanna University - Affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the most liberal of Lutheran denominations, Susquehanna is a four-year university of approximately 2,000 students located in downtown Selinsgrove, PA. Susquehanna has particularly strong programs in business and communications and is often ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report and the Princeton Review.
 • Bucknell University - A Patriot League institution, Bucknell University is one of the best schools in North America. It's programs have provided many-an-executive, political leader, etc. with a high-quality education and it's sports teams are the best in the Patriot League. The campus is stunning and is rated one of the most beautiful in America.

Shopping

 • Susquehanna Valley Mall Located along Routes 11 & 15, the Susquehanna Valley Mall is the largest mall in the Susquehanna Valley and features a wide array of mid-range shopping and department stores. Regional favorite department store Boscov's has a signature store in the mall as well as smaller clothing options like American Eagle and Christopher Banks.
 • Orchard Hills Shopping Plaza Home to a grocer as well as several small, locally-owned shops, Orchard Hills is a good place to go for bargains local crafts.
 • Market Street Shopping District Lining Market Street in Selinsgrove are picturesque shops and restaurants, most of which are locally owned. From a bridal boutique to a Very Bradley retailer to the pubs and breweries of Selinsgrove, Market Street is the central location for retail and relaxation.

Work

While a new office park is being constructed along Pennsylvania route 522 in Selinsgrove, the central Susquehanna Valley, containing the Sunbury-Lewisburg-Selinsgrove area, generally commutes to the area's urban centers for skilled jobs. Shorter commutes include those to area hospitals, including Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg, PA; Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA; and Sunbury Community Hospital in Sunbury, PA. Harrisburg is the main source of skilled jobs and lies just 60 miles south of the area. Some residents choose to commute north Erie or Wilkes-Barre - Scranton and a select few commute to the larger urban centers in the region, including Philadelphia and New York.

Selinsgrove's exurban and occasionally rural nature can be seen in it's cellular phone coverage quality. Selinsgrove is served locally by Cingular Wireless, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint-Nextel Wireless. T-Mobile does not serve the area and users without national plans will pay roaming feels for calls made in the area. Reception on all four carriers is mediocre. Full reception is common in the downtown and shopping areas of Selinsgrove while lesser reception can be found in the residential areas. The rural farms and fields outside the area have lower reception that is sometimes spotty. There are no wireless hotspots in the area, though rumors have circulated that the Market Street District may soon be wireless-enabled. Telephone numbers dialed on cellular telephones must include the area code as well as the 7-digit phone number. No preceding "1" is necessary. Local calls made from land-line phones in the area do not require an area code. Long distance codes require both the preceding "1" and the area code.
